Volume is a quantity that indicates the space occupied by a certain amount of matter.

In the international system (SI), The unit that measures the volume is the cubic meter (m3). It is also common to use the liter or milliliter (mL) in volume measure. Milk, soda and many other liquids can be measured using the liter as a unit of measure.

The cubic decimeter and the liter

The cubic decimeter (dm3) is the volume of a cube whose edge measures 1 dm (one decimeter), ie 10 cm. This unit is equivalent to liter (L)

1 dm3 = 1L

The cubic centimeter and the milliliter

The cubic centimeter (cm3) is the volume of a cube whose edge measures 1 cm. Now follow the reasoning: One cubic decimeter is one thousand cubic centimeters (1 dm3) = (1000 cm3). The milliliter (mL) is the thousandth part of the liter and thus one liter corresponds to one thousand milliliters (1L = 1000 mL).

Since one cubic tenth equals one liter, we can then state that:

1 dm3 = 1L = 1,000 cm3 = 1000 ml

Thus, it follows that: 1cm3 = 1 ml

Extension: Property that matter has to occupy a place in space. Volume measures the extent of a body.

To measure the volume of fish you can put water in a graduated glass and then dip the fish in it as shown in the figure. The volume difference seen by the graduation of the glass is the volume occupied by the fish. You can do this with any object you want to know the volume.
